GT Catch Report from Boggy Representative Mr. Gibo, Okinawa Fishing Tackle Brand

Mr. Gibo has shared an exciting report of a successful GT (Giant Trevally) catch, detailing the process that led to this achievement. Here’s the story in his own words:

On the Day of the Catch
I joined a charter targeting GTs aboard the K701.

Initially, I had a different goal in mind and decided to focus on GT fishing after achieving my primary goal.

During the morning’s falling tide, there was an atmosphere of anticipation among the other anglers aboard, but unfortunately, there were no bites, and the morning ended without any action.

Once I had accomplished my initial goal, I switched my focus to GT fishing.

The conditions were promising, with decent wind and waves, creating a perfect setting for a GT strike. However, there were no signs of activity—no chases, no bites. The tide eventually stalled, marking the end of the morning session.

We kept moving from point to point. About two hours after the tide shifted from falling to rising, I finally had my first contact with a GT of the day.

The First Contact
I tried a variety of lures, rotating through options to provoke a response. The lure that finally enticed the GT was the Gataro 200.

Although the fish wasn’t particularly large, it aggressively followed and struck the lure but unfortunately didn’t hook. Originally designed for yellowfin tuna, the Gataro 200 popper features minimal drag and delivers reliable action even in rough water, making it user-friendly for beginners.

The Final Catch
We then moved to another spot. This was a challenging area— a shallow reef zone with depths of less than 2 meters, extending to areas no deeper than 10 meters.

As the rising tide progressed, irregular waves formed over the reef. Several needlefish chased the lure, signaling a possible strike from GT in the near future.

The captain announced:
“This will be the last cast before we reposition the boat.”

I had been eyeing a specific slit in the reef from afar, thinking, “That’s the spot!” Without hesitation, I cast my line.

After about three or four jerks, it happened. Amid the whitecaps, I executed a long jerk to create bubble trails for added lure appeal. Just as the lure began to surface, a dramatic strike erupted!

The line sliced through the water as the GT attacked, and I immediately felt the weight on my Boil Shot 83XH. Hooking implemented!

The Fight
From the moment it hooked, I knew it was a big one. At a depth of around 3 meters, I kept the rod low to prevent the GT from diving into the reef.

As the GT made powerful runs, I endured, carefully handle to avoid the coral. When the fish turned sideways, I raised the rod, using pumping action to draw it closer.

It made several attempts to dive into the reef slits, but I held firm. I asked the captain to move the boat to deeper waters, which gave me the opportunity to bring the fish within view.

The Moment of Success
It was massive. Even at a glance, it was clear this GT was over 30 kg. The captain managed to net it, but it was so thick and heavy that he struggled to bring it aboard on his own.

Despite its size, the Boil Shot 83XH rod still had plenty of reserve power, while remaining easy for the angler to handle. I look forward to using this rod to pursue even larger GTs in the future.
